Salt supply dwindles

Penfield, N.Y.Penfields salt barn holds roughly 7,000 tons of salt, but is down to a mere 2,000 tons.

Consistent snowfall and continuous thawing and freezing has meant more plowing and salting than usual. Town leaders do not want to reach a point where the road salt supply is no more.

Once its out, its out, said Ronnie Williams, Penfield Director of Public Works.

The town has begun rationing its salt supply and will use a mixture of salt and sand, said Williams.

Its a safety issue, said Tom Lechner of Penfield.

The town of Greece was in a similar boat until late Tuesday, according to town supervisor Bill Reilich (R).

Its supplier, American Rock Salt, added to the salt supply to an extent that should carry Greece through the remainder of the winter.

The town had not yet exhausted its supply of salt, which Penfield has.

As recently as November, American Rock Salt had a surplus of road salt. The mine produced less salt than it does in normal years because of a lower demand, said plant manager Greg Norris.

Were producing as much as we can as efficiently as we can, said Norris.

The company has not shipped salt to the Carolinas or Georgia, said Norris.

American Rock Salt has been working to produce more salt for 42-straight days, added Norris.

Town leaders in Brighton, Henrietta and Gates said they feel confident with the salt supply in their barns.
