Ski resort business booming

Grove, N.Y. -- With snow and winter weather thats been brutal, many are taking to the ski slopes.

This is a banner year, said Celeste Schoonover, general manager at Swain Ski Resort. The cold weather has been great for snow making and keeping the base for snow in great condition.

Schoonover said at the end of last ski season, the resort had approximately 50,000 total visitors, and the resort is already close to hitting that number this February.

Many local ski resorts are packed this week because of the traditional winter-February break, and Schoonover said many families are deciding to stay longer than usual to take advantage of the time off and stellar ski conditions.

Jeff Rease was making his second trip to the resort with his family.

We were here Saturday and it was packed, he said while walking with his daughter to the snow tubes. It was buried and there werent any parking spots.

Schoonover said she also believes many ski resorts across the country are seeing a boost in business from the Winter Olympics.

Theyve gotten people excited about the snow, she said. Snow, skiing and all variations of the sport are showcased.

The resort is nearing record profits, according to Schoonover.
