Business roof collapses; building deemed "unsafe"

Caledonia, N.Y. -- The roof of a hardware store building in Caledonia collapsed Wednesday, forcing two of its outside walls to bow outward.

It happened at the Ace Hardware building at 229 North St., an abandoned building once used as a mill.

Part of the roof collapsed, and a small section of a wall collapsed into the parking lot.

Fire Chief Thomas Torpey and Police Chief Daniel Chapman determined the building was unsafe.

Police blocked off the main parking lot as well as North Street access to the business, and a nearby side walk. Students walking to school will have to stay on the west side of North Street through this area.

Caledonia police said they will be monitoring the area until the owners can render the building safe.
