Jail to get body scanners

Geneseo, N.Y. - Out of the airport and into the jail. The Livingston County Sheriffs Office recently purchased five body scanners, the first of which will be installed at the county jail inmate entrance.

We hope that they'll deter any contraband coming into our jail facility, said Matthew Bean, Undersheriff with the Livingston County Sheriffs Office.

The scanners will be used in place of the metal detectors which do not provide a full-scan of the body, Bean said.

It cost the office $15,000 for five scanners which were acquired through a program that allowed for a steep discount on the machines, added Bean.

In the future, his office expects the scanners to be a cost-saver and are considered safe, according to Bean.

The cost per system will save the tax dollars of any type of investigation or court proceeding," Bean said.

We do have a lot of documents and a lot of studies that were put on and tested with these scanners and  we don't see that there's going to be any type of physical or any type of concern with the radiation that they put out."

After installing the first scanner in about two weeks, sheriffs deputies are planning to add a second one at the visitor entrance.
