Air travel troubles remain despite break in weather

ROCHESTER, N.Y. The slightly warmer temperatures helped to clear many roads across the region but the same cannot be said for other parts of the country still trying to clean up after a blast of winter weather, and thats affecting travel plans for some.

Im supposed to go to Philadelphia and I was supposed to leave Thursday, said John Karkosa, a passenger at the Greater Rochester International Airport. My flight was delayed and I had to spend an additional day, get a hotel and figure stuff out.

With the February/winter break underway, the delays are causing many families headaches and cutting short vacation time planned well in advance.

I really want to get on vacation, said Emma Sodoma, a 4th grader on her way to North Carolina to see family with her parents. Our flight got cancelled twice and delayed once, now we only have 2 days there instead of 3.

Dozens of flights going to and from Rochester were delayed and cancelled, and although those flights are generally re-scheduled or refunded by the airlines, hotel reservations made in advance are generally not refunded.

Not enough people use travel insurance, said Anita Schoepfel, a Rochester travel agent. I always suggest it.

Schoepfel says the insurance covers more than just bad weather and that it can cover other instances that make travel difficult such as illnesses.

Its a small percentage for what youre spending on the travel overall, Schoepfel continued. Some of the policies let you cancel for almost any reason.
