More NYS students taking AP exams

New York (AP) -- A report looking at public high school graduates taking Advanced Placement exams found that more students in New York state are taking them than a decade ago.

The report found 38 percent of 2013 public high school graduates took an AP exam during high school. That's up from 31 percent in 2003.

The College Board, which runs the exams, is issuing its annual report on the program Tuesday. The report looks at every state.

AP exams offer high school students a chance to earn college credits.

The report found the percentage of black and Latino high school students in New York state taking the exam has gone up since the previous year.

State education official Ken Slentz said the increased number of exam takers is encouraging but more needs to be done.
