Radiation leak in N.M. causing concern

Carlsbad, N.Y. - Concerns are coming to light about a radiation leak at a nuclear waste facility in New Mexico.

Investigators now admit the problem is serious; as more than a dozen workers have been exposed.

The leak at a waste isolation pilot plant was first detected two weeks ago.

Investigators say a filtration system kicked in right away, and 99 percent of the leak was contained deep underground.

However, since then, 13 workers have tested positive for radiation exposure. That number could rise as additional workers are tested.

"Whenever you have a disaster of any kind there is always issues, said Eddy Co. Manager Rick Rudometkin. You always mitigate the disaster and move forward."

The facility WIPP is a deep underground dump site that handles low-grade nuclear waste and is the only facility of its kind in the nation.

It is located 26 miles outside of Carlsbad, near the Texas border.
