"Squirrel Slam" draws support and protest

Holley, N.Y. The Village of Holley is divided again this year as the annual Squirrel Slam approaches.

The yearly event, scheduled for February 22, is a fundraiser for the Holley Fire Department.

During the Squirrel Slam, hunters can openly hunt squirrels.

A Facebook page called Stop the Squirrel Slam was created to protest the event, and a protest has been scheduled for February 22 at 4:30 p.m. in front of the Holley Fire Department.

While gray, black, and fox squirrels are protected and have a specified season, red squirrels can be hunted any time of year.
