Dead ducks found near Lake Ontario

Rochester, N.Y. The Department of Environmental Conservation said the bitter cold winter has taken a toll on wildlife.

According to the DEC, they have received reports of dead or dying ducks along Lake Ontario. 13WHAM News was told some of the birds have been collected for testing and the results showed they died of starvation.

It's probably due to the cold weather and limited amount of open water Most of the ducks dying are diving ducks so they feed under the water, so they are limited to where they can get to the food when there is very little open water, said Mike Wasilco, Regional Wildlife Manager.

Wasilco said the problem is much worse in Erie County because there is a bigger duck population near Lake Erie in the winter.
