High beams lead to felony DWI arrest

Livonia, N.Y. A 50-year-old Livingston County man was charged with a felony DWI after deputies said he was drinking and driving while having two minors in his car.

Deputies said Lawrence Hapke was driving on Federal Road when he was pulled over for failing to dim his high beams. He refused a breath test and had open containers of alcoholic beverages in the car, according to deputies.

In addition to the felony DWI with a child (Leandra's Law) and misdemeanor DWI, Hapke was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child less then 17 years of age, aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree, drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle on a highway and failing to dim high beams.

Hapkes right to drive was suspended. Hes being held in the Livingston County Jail in lieu of $5,000.00 cash or $10,000.00 bond.
