Livingston Co. warns about sweepstakes scam

Geneseo, N.Y. -- The Livingston County Sheriffs Office is warning people about a sweepstakes scam.

A resident of Livingston County was contacted by a person who said he was an attorney for the Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. The caller said that they had won more than $2 million dollars and needed an attorney to represent them and collect their winnings.

For a fee, the caller was willing to act as their attorney and told her how to get a prepaid cash card. The resident gave the caller her info and had the money stolen from her.

Sheriff Tom Dougherty would like to warn any member of the community not to send money via prepaid cards or money transfers to anyone they do not know, nor can they verify the legitimacy of the request.
