Teen charged in armed robberies

Gates, N.Y. -- Police have arrested and charged Keith Speed, 16, with robbing five local pharmacies and convenience stores in the last two weeks.

Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode said Speed wore a ski mask as he entered the stores, typically late at night or early in the morning, brandished a gun and demanded cash.

In actuality, it was a BB gun made to look real, added VanBrederode.

Speed stole cigarettes and money, according to police.

He was arrested at 8 a.m. Sunday, five hours after Speed allegedly entered the CVS Pharmacy on Spencerport Road wearing a ski mask and brandishing a weapon.

Police said they tracked his footprints in the snow to a home in the area and later took him into custody.

Speed was arraigned in Gates Town Court and later transported to the Monroe County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.
