Record year for water main breaks

Rochester, N.Y. The Monroe County Water Authority blamed the consistent cold weather for a record number of water main breaks this winter.

Water Authority officials said pipes at all depths have been impacted because the long, sustained cold put pressure on them.

January and February each set all-time records for water main breaks this year.

The Water Authority said the shift from sub-zero to more tolerable temperatures could make the problem even worse as spring begins.
