Rare brain disorder found in Corning resident

Rochester, N.Y. A scare at school last month led 12-year-old Corning resident Joshua Beckhorn to be diagnosed with a brain disorder, called AVM.

The disorder, discovered after Beckhorn lost feeling in his left arm and leg and fell at school, is rare.

Beckhorn underwent surgery and has been recovering in the brain injury and rehab unit at Saint Marys Hospital.

He also has been giving presentations about his disorder.

I thought it was important because I have a lot of friends who are wondering what happened to me and they are all going to be asking questions. I wanted to tell them in one big powerpoint, Beckhorn said about the research and presentation he has done on AVM.

It stemmed from missing his school science fair and he was upset that was happening. I told him he could do a project here and it was something he could take back, said Angela Ferro, a speech language pathologist.

After going through physical, speech and cognitive therapy, Josh gets to go home next week and share his presentation with others.
