License plate thefts spike

Rochester, N.Y. You might want to keep a close eye on your license plates.

Several area police stations have reported recent increases in license plate thefts.

Earlier in the week, approximately 24 people reported their license plates stolen in Chili, and most recently, as many as 30 people reported license plates stolen in Irondequoit.

Whatever it was, it was well orchestrated, said Lisa Kieffer, who lives at the Woodridge Apartments in Irondequoit. It couldnt be one or two people that went through this whole complex all in one night, she said. Nobody saw anything or heard anything.

Irondequoit Police Sergeant Mark Bean said the investigation into the recent license plate thefts is ongoing, but he believes the incidents to be either a part of a big prank, or an organized effort to try to use the plates on possibly stolen vehicles.

Bean isnt sold its part of a bigger, organized effort, because of new scanners which would quickly catch the nullified license plates, but said its still a possibility.

The most recent string of license plate thefts have all occurred in apartment parking lots, likely overnight.

Police say its important to report license plate theft immediately so license plate numbers can be voided.

The New York Department of Motor Vehicles provides MV-78B forms for stolen license plates, which allow for plates to be replaced free of charge.
