Environmental damage bill passes state Senate

Albany, N.Y. -- A copper theft at a Rochester Gas & Electric station that caused an oil spill in 2010 has inspired a proposed state law.

The New York State Senate passed a bill, sponsored by Sen. Joe Robach (R-Greece), Wednesday that would make any crime resulting in environmental damage a felony.

Thieves broke into RG&Es Russell Station in Greece in August 2010, causing 4,800 gallons of oil to leak and contaminate nearby land and water.

The bill will head to the state Assembly.
