Pit bull attack under investigation

Geneseo, N.Y. -- Livingston County sheriffs deputies said they're investigating a pit bull attack on a toddler.

Deputies responded to a home for a reported dog attack Thursday.

Investigators tell us that the incident involved three pet pit bulls.

Two of the pit bulls lived primarily outside, while one pit bull lived inside the home.

When a woman let the outside pit bulls inside, one of the pit bulls attacked the woman's 18-month-old.

Investigators also said that the inside pit bull attacked the outside pit bull, apparently trying to help protect the child.

Undersheriff Matthew Bean of Livingston County said, "The third dog, she said [the mother], he kind of came to her protection and went after the two dogs as she was trying to break them apart."

Both the mother and child suffered injuries in the incident.

The Livingston County Sheriff's Department said the toddler suffered bite wounds to his face and head area.

The mother was also injured with bites on her arms when she tried to intervene.

Police said dog control officers were involved, but are not expecting charges to be filed.

The Livinsgton County Undersheriff says the two dogs that attacked the mother and toddler have been put down.

The dog that came to the family's aid is being treated at a local veterinarian's office.
Neighbors described the two dogs that were put down as vicious.

"It was that bark that you knew they weren't very nice dogs very viscous you could tell," said Kerry Prentice of Geneseo.

As of Friday afternoon, Strong Memorial Hospital said the boy was still in guarded condition.
