Phelan named new GPD Chief

Greece, N.Y. -- Captain Pat Phelan will be the next police chief in the Town of Greece.

A formal announcement by Supervisor Bill Reilich was held on Monday morning.

Earlier this month, Chief Todd Baxter announced he was leaving the department April 1 and taking a job with the Veterans Outreach Center.

Baxter replaced interim police chief and current Police Captain Brian Uhrmacher, who was one of those considered in this most recent search.

Prior to that, Greece's police chief was Merritt Rahn, who was indicted, convicted and sentenced to prison time following a highly publicized public corruption trial.  Two other members of the GPD under Chief Rahn were also sent to prison.

Captain Phelan is the son of former Greece Police Chief Gerald Phelan, who preceded Rahn.

According to the Greece website, Captain Phelan was hired by the Greece Police Department in 1989 and promoted to Captain in 2010.
