Fuel theft with power drill

Gates, N.Y. - Police say someone actually used a power drill to drain and steal gasoline from the tank of a 2012 Chevy Tahoe.

The theft happened in the parking lot of the Best Western Motel on Buell Road.

About 20 gallons of gas was stolen.

Police stressed how dangerous and potentially deadly the method of drilling holes in the fuel tank could have been.

When youre dealing with fuel its always dangerous, said Sgt. Silvio Palermo of the Gates Police. Drilling holes could have caused a spark and ignited the fuel.

There were no surveillance cameras in the area where the truck was parked, but police are still investigating.

According to police reports the theft likely happened between March 13th and March 17th.

Whoever stole the fuel could face criminal mischief and larceny charges.
