Cuomo cracks down on STAR double dippers

Albany, N.Y. - Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a crackdown on double dippers --those who live in rent-regulated apartments, while also claiming a School Tax Relief (STAR) exemption on a separately owned home.

When records were checked last year, 156 duplicate names were found.

It issimple common sense, said Thomas Mattox, Commissioner of NYS Dept. of Taxation and Finance. If you lease a rent-regulated apartment, you cannot also have another home as your primary residencewe are taking action that protects all tax-paying renters and homeowners.

The Basic STAR exemption saves homeowners approximately $700 per year. It is available to all homeowners with incomes below $500,000. An enhanced STAR program is available to senior homeowners with incomes below $81,900.
