Woman pleads guilty to kidnapping while pregnant

Rochester, N.Y. -- A Steuben County woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to kidnapping a Pennsylvania woman and her 6-month-old child after escaping a hospital while under arrest.

Billie Jo Ribble, 36, of Bath, faces a minimum of 20 years in prison, a maximum of life in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both, after pleading guilty in front of U.S. Attorney William Hochul.

The U.S. attorney handling the case said Ribble was arrested in Mansfield, Pa. on burglary and grand larceny charges March 1.

After being remanded in jail, Ribble, who was pregnant, was taken to the maternity ward at a Wellsboro, Pa. hospital. While there, she assaulted a corrections officer who was guarding her and escaped the hospital by climbing out a window.

That night, Ribble entered a home in Wellsboro and threatened to kill a woman and her infant daughter with a large butchers knife before ordering the woman to drive all three of them in the womans car.

Ribble directed the woman to drive into New York state, before finally leaving the car just off New York State Route 15 in Lindley, Steuben County.

The woman called police from a gas station in Pennsylvania. They found Ribble at her boyfriends home in Corning, where she barricaded herself in the attic until eventually surrendering.

Ribbles sentencing is scheduled for June 25.
