Police, FBI search for evidence of Rt. 390 shooting

by Evan White

Greece, N.Y. -- Two heavily traveled sections of State Route 390 were closed Wednesday because of a possible shooting from two days earlier.

"It's a little scary," said Steve Fiore of Hilton.

He was on his way to a store to return items when he, along with hundreds of other drivers, found himself stuck in a massive traffic jam.

"It's crazy," said Ren Thash of Greece. "I'm just heading to the gym down there."

Greece police received a report on Monday that a man driving north on 390 near the Route 104 East exit when his vehicle was struck by a bullet. He was not hurt.

The report came Monday. The search didn't take place until Wednesday, though police said they had been investigating since Monday.

"It didn't necessarily come to our attention immediately that that was the possible incident that occurred," said Lt. Casey Voelkl of the Greece Police Department.

When it became clear that the object that went through the car may have been a bullet, Voelkl said arraignments were made to get help from the FBI and state troopers.

The search for evidence would continue on 390 North just after rush hour until roughly 11 a.m. and then 390 South was closed at the same location, police said. About an hour later, 390 was reopened but a portion of West Ridge Road was closed.

Police did not say if any evidence was recovered as of Wednesday afternoon. No one was injured during the incident on Monday, police said.
