RCSD employees speak out against proposed cuts
Rochester, N.Y. -- Some city school faculty members said theyre concerned about job cuts in the districts proposed budget for the 2014-15 school year.
The budget includes dropping 32 support staff positions. Opponents said it would be the third straight year the district cut clerical jobs.
At a forum Tuesday night, they argued the district cant uphold its commitment to customer service if more resources are slashed.
I love my job, and I see myself as a problem solver, said Laura Kuhn, a clerk at the Wilson Commencement Academy. Its my job to take care of things so that other staff members can focus on kids in the classrooms.
Which efficiency expert thought that lower-paid, highly efficient clerks who deal with more parents and children than anyone else in this district are what needs to be eradicated in order to improve customer service? asked Dan DiClemente, president of BENTE Local 2419, the union that supports local students. One of the key priorities outlined in the districts action plan is customer service, and yet this budget proposes eliminating the very people who provide it.
