Brockport college students plead not guilty

Brockport, N.Y. -- Two College at Brockport students pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges Wednesday.

Shane Oliver and Robert Yates were charged after a controversial photograph of a dog doing a keg stand surfaced on the Internet.

Police said Oliver was holding the dog in the picture, and that Yates allegedly took the picture.

Family members and a group of friends were in court to support them.

Their attorney said the picture was blown out of proportion.

"It was part of a staged photograph, it happens all the time in every context," said defense attorney Barry Covert. "They have every absolute right to do that. They didn't harm the dog in anyway. They didn't give it any alcohol, never intended to give it any alcohol. Neither boy would ever do anything to harm any animal."

Both men will be back in court on May 7.
