State leaders push heroin crackdown

Albany, N.Y. -- State lawmakers are pushing a measure to combat a resurgence of heroin use.

A package of six bills would create stricter penalties for selling opioids resulting in someones death. It would also equip first responders with overdose reversal drugs, require health insurers to cover rehab programs and anti-addiction medications, and create a public-service announcement for teenagers about the dangers of heroin abuse.

State Democrats proposed the measure following a series of forums on heroin abuse last year.

State Republicans are currently holding similar forums statewide.
