Two popes canonized Sunday

Vatican City (AP) -- Pope Francis has conferred sainthood upon two 20th-century popes from opposite wings of the Catholic Church.

And he praised them both -- the progressive Pope John XXIII for convening the Second Vatican Council, and the conservative John Paul II for helping to implement the changes the council brought to the church.

Not only were two popes canonized today, but two popes took part in the ceremony. Retired Pope Benedict XVI joined Francis on the altar in St. Peter's Square.
