Highland lilacs need warmer weather

Rochester, N.Y. The Lilac Trees at Highland are starting to bud, but were told the plants still need warmer weather to make them peak in time for the festival.

The Rochester Lilac Festival attracts hundreds of thousands of people to Highland Park.
The lilacs were at peak last year, but this year theyre a bit behind.

Mark Quinn, Superintendent of Horticulture for Monroe County Park, said ideally 70 degree days and nights in the 50s would help move the plants along.

There will be lilacs in bloom for the festival that begins May 9. It's just a wait and see at this point of how many trees will be in bloom.
