Vigil held for Brittany Burgio

Rochester, N.Y. -- Friends and family gathered to remember a 17-year-old girl that was struck and killed while crossing Dewey Avenue last night.

Brittany Burgio was walking from 7-Eleven to her grandmother's house at the time of the accident.

Brittany attended East Rochester High School until she stopped going in the fall.

Friends said she was smart, a fighter, and someone who cared deeply about her family.

"Remember her as a nice, caring, and kind person," said April Burgio, Brittany's mother. "She will always be that way and will always be looking down on us just like that."

April said the accident never should have happened.

The 23-year-old driver who hit Brittany was ticketed for driving without a license.

Police have not released the driver's name.
