New police chief sworn in

Rochester, N.Y. Michael Ciminelli was officially sworn in as Police Chief Saturday in front of a standing-room-only audience.

I am humbled by the support Ive received, said Ciminelli, Rochesters 34th Police Chief. I promise to work hard to earn your continuing support and respect.

Ciminelli had been given the title of Interim Police Chief following the resignation of former Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard in November.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren (D) announced Ciminelli as her choice to succeed Sheppard in March.

Ciminelli grew up in Rochesters 19th Ward and attended high school at McQuaid Jesuit.

I want everybody in this community to believe, Ciminelli told the crowd after being sworn in. Trust the Rochester Police Department, he added.

Ciminelli once served as Elmiras Police Chief, and has also served as Assistant District Attorney in Monroe County.
