Rochester Music Hall of Fame induction Sunday
Rochester, N.Y. One band caused a traffic jam in Charlotte so bad that the city of Rochester said no more to its concerts.
Duke Jupiter was that band, and now they are being welcomed back home to Rochester with a red carpet roll-out.
I remember every gig. Just about. But they were so gracious, we met a lot of folks. It was a great ride. Id do it over again, said Greg Walker, singer and lead guitarist of Duke Jupiter, as he remembers the bands run to MTV fame.
Duke Jupiter isnt the only band being inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame on Sunday. Joining them will be the great House of Guitars, a local Rochester institution known worldwide.
In the early days we were pretty broke, said Armand Schaubroeck. We had to sleep at the store because we didnt have any money for insurance. So wed sleep behind the amps.
The HOG isnt the only Rochester institution that will be inducted. Local radio station WDKX will be inducted as well, with music that will sound familiar to almost everyone.
WDKX will be honored by a few famous names, including Russell Thompkins of The Stylistics, Reginald Torian from The Impressions and Kathy Sledge of Sister Sledge.
We are family. I was 16 when I sang that. And people didnt realize that. To have people still love and appreciate your music is amazing, said Kathy Sledge.
Sledge will be singing that iconic song on Sunday.
Also being inducted are violinist David Hochstein and Emily Sibley Watson who helped found the school that bears Hochsteins name.
The induction ceremony will be held at Eastman Theater at 7 p.m. Tickets of the few hundred remaining can be purchased at rochestermusic.org
