Richards defends RCSD renovations

Rochester, N.Y. -- The citys former mayor defended a shaky start to a major school renovation project Monday.

Tom Richards, now chairman of Rochester Schools Modernization Program, said the weather, unforeseen problems with dated structures, and late add-ons by the city school district have put parts of the $1.2 billion project behind schedule.

The project includes renovations to School No. 58, whose students will go to the Franklin campus for the fourth straight school year next fall.

Construction there is expected to be complete within the next year. The district will decide when to move students into the building.

Richards said the project is still on track and on budget overall.

Im looking forward. Thats where Im looking, Richards said. Its important we get this thing done. Its important we get this finished. Im not looking at going back to blame somebody.
