Mystery behind license plate thefts remains

Chili, N.Y. Police continue to investigate who stole more than 100 license plates last weekend in the towns of Chili and Gates.

The mobile Department of Motor Vehicles unit at the Chili Town Hall opened an hour-and-a-half early Tuesday to speed up the process of replacing the stolen plates.

New ones were issued at no cost, but inconvenienced drivers wondered why their plates were stolen.

It's really weird because I know you can't really turn them in for scrap or anything like that, said Colton Battaglini, who had his plates stolen. It seems odd to do a prank and do it to 100 people.
