NY cop accidently shoots partner; arrested for DWI

NEW YORK (AP) -- A New York City police detective has been arraigned on a drunken driving charge after he accidentally shot his partner in the wrist.

Authorities say Detective Jay Poggi had taken out his revolver to show his partner the weapon's hammer when it discharged. It happened inside a car in the Howard Beach neighborhood of Queens just after 3 a.m. Thursday.

The 58-year-old Poggi drove his partner to Jamaica Hospital where he underwent surgery and is in stable condition.

Prosecutors say Poggi was arrested after he failed a field sobriety test. They say he later refused to take a Breathalyzer test and has been suspended without pay.

It wasn't clear if the veteran had an attorney. A representative for the union representing police detectives didn't immediately return a request for comment.
