Empire State Summer Games cancelled

New York A yearly tradition that goes back 30 years has now been cancelled.

The Empire State Games were put on hold due to funding issues starting in 2010, with the hope that the Olympic-style competition would be bought back.

State budget cuts have forced the summer games to be cancelled after the 2010 games were held in Buffalo.

The Empire State Sports Foundation, a local non-profit that intended to revive the games recently filed papers with the state Supreme Court stating intentions to disband.

Many local athletes who competed in the games went on to professional athletic careers, including: Abby Wambach, NBA player Christian Laettner, Olympic skier Diann Roffe, Olympic sport shooter Jason Turner, and NHL player Stephen Gionta.

13WHAM News has reached out to the founder of the Empire State Sports Foundation to see how the cancellation of the summer games would impact the winter games.

The Empire State winter games were held in Lake Placid this year.
