Team effort in fight against child abuse

Rochester, N.Y. - One in ten children will be sexually abused by the age of 18.

In Rochester, last year alone, more than 1,500 children were treated at the Bivona Child Advocacy Center on Lake Avenue.

On Wednesday, it brought together members of law enforcement to speak with one voice about the need for awareness this month -- Child Abuse Prevention Month.

"The child tells their story once, one forensic interview. They also then get their medical exam right on site," said Mary Whittier, Executive Director of Bivona Child Advocacy Center. "They work with a therapist and a victim advocate. So while the child is getting their interview and exam, the parent is meeting with the victim advocate to explain the system of what to expect next."

Since the Bivona Child Advocacy Center was founded here, more than 12,000 children have been evaluated there.
