Black ice leads to car crashes

Irondequoit, N.Y. -- Emergency crews responded to several crashes late Tuesday night on State Route 590.

The Laurelton Fire Department reported that portions of the highway were shut down between Browncroft Boulevard and Norton Street in both directions because of multiple accidents involving between 12 and 15 vehicles.

State police told 13WHAM the road closure was designed to clear up crash scenes, and to treat roads from icy conditions blamed on black ice.

The roadways have since been reopened.

Laurelton firefighters said some people were taken from the scene by ambulance, but they didn't know the extent of their injuries.
