Police to help license plate theft victims

Chili, N.Y. -- The Monroe County Westside Mobile DMV will be open for extended hours Tuesday to help people who had their license plates stolen in Gates and Chili last weekend.

The unit will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Chili Town Hall on Chili Avenue. Gates police officers and Monroe County sheriffs deputies will be on hand to help.

More than 100 license plates were stolen from apartment complexes in the two towns.

Police said theyre happy to help with paperwork, but they admit its a big pain for everyone involved.

This is more of a crime of inconvenience for our residents, said Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode. Its not so much the monetary value; its the inconvenience of having to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles, getting new plates and paperwork. Its obviously going to be time consuming for the people who had their plates stolen.

Officers said the plates could have been stolen to be scrapped for cash. Anyone with information about the thefts should call 911.
