Greece residents fighting car wash proposal

Greece, N.Y. -- The Town of Greece could soon get another car wash added to the cluster near West Ridge Road, and some residents aren't happy about it.

"I have a LaserWash, a Buckmans Car Wash and a Delta Sonic car wash all within minutes of my house, and we really don't need another car wash in Greece, not on West Ridge Road anyhow," said Craig Ridd, who lives near the proposed site. "I like my backyard. It's very private, and I think I'm going to lose that."

Run by the Daniele Family, Mardanth Enterprises, Inc. owns Mario's Italian Restaurant and Royal Car Wash. The company is eying the site of an old school to open a new car wash location across the street from the Mall at Greece Ridge.

The Diocese of Rochester owns the building that is currently up for sale, once St. John's Catholic School. The property does not have the proper zoning, but Mardanth Enterprises, Inc. has submitted an appeal to the town's board of zoning appeals to change that.

If approved, the plan is to tear down the historic site, build a Royal Car wash and add a second entrance to the lot on Duxbury Road.

"Which practically puts it in my background," Ridd said as he pointed to a project map. "That is, my house line is right there and the car wash entrance is right there, right past our houses."

Ridd said he and his neighbors are concerned about the traffic another car wash will add to the already busy West Ridge Road and spill over into his residential neighborhood.

"There is going to be a lot more traffic than we already have and we already have enough," Ridd said. "I can only hope that somebody will listen because right now I doubt I can stop it on my own."

No one from the Daniele family was available for comment Thursday.

The town will hold a public hearing about the car wash Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Greece Town Hall.
