Convicted child killer up for parole

Collins, N.Y. -- 13WHAM News will learn later this week if a convicted child killer is paroled from prison.

Eric Smith is serving a sentence of nine years to life for murdering and torturing 4-year-old Derrick Robie in Steuben County in 1993.

Smith was 13 at the time. He is now 34 and serving his sentence at Collins Correctional Facility in Erie County.

This is his seventh attempt at parole.

Derrick Robie's family and hundreds from the community have sent the parole board letters opposing Smith's release.

In 2012, the parole board refused to release Smith, citing public safety concerns.
