New boating law beginning May 1

Livonia, N.Y. -- A new boating law will go into effect throughout the state next month.

The law states children under the age of 18 must complete a boater education course in order to operate a boat.

A boating certificate will cost $10.

Livingston County Sheriff's Office will be holding five training dates. The course will be free of charge, but students will still need to pay for a boating certificate.

Those courses will be held April 12, May 17, June 7 and Aug. 9 at the Livonia Fire Department on South Livonia Road, and July 14  at Long Point Park on West Lake Road.
