Clippers owner banned for life

New York -- Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been banned for life by the NBA for racist comments in a recording.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said he will try to force a sale of the Clippers, and also fined Sterling $2.5 million.

Silver called Sterling's comments and views "deeply offensive and harmful."

Sterling's being investigated amid allegations he made racially charged comments in a recorded conversation with a woman.

The players' union had asked the commissioner to act quickly, preferably before the Clippers play host to Golden State in a critical Game 5 of their first-round playoff series Tuesday night.
