Body identified after 30 years

Shelby, N.Y. -- Part of an old mystery has been solved. A woman found dead in Orleans County more than 30 years ago has been identified by New York State Police.

DNA testing played a critical role.

According to New York State Police, the body is that of Shari Lynne Ball, originally from Florida. In 1983, she told her family she was going to New York state to begin a modeling career, but she was eventually reported missing in June of that year.

In October, a badly decomposed body was found in the town of Shelby, just off Route 63. The body was not identifiable at the time.

In 2013, that body was exhumed for DNA testing, and matched DNA provided by the family of Ball.

The cause of her death remains a mystery, but police suspect foul play.

The investigation is ongoing, and New York State Police are encouraging anyone who knew Shari Ball, or anyone who may be able to provide any information about her, to contact them at (585) 344-6210.
