April 19 could be CDH awareness day
Rochester, N.Y. The New York State Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution to ask Governor Cuomo to declare April 19 a day of awareness and remembrance for children with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Morelle announced Saturday.
Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, or CDH, is a potentially life-threatening deformation that allows the internal organs to move into the chest cavity and impair normal lung development.
We mark April 19 as a day of remembrance of those who have lost their battle with CDH and renew our commitment to raising the publics awareness of this serious health issue, Morelle said in a statement. It is imperative that as a state and nation we begin to recognize the challenge CDH is presenting to thousands of families and identify ways to take action on their behalf.
The resolution was introduced in honor of Grace Elizabeth Esposito, daughter of Empire State Development Regional Director Vincent Esposito and 13WHAMs Jennifer Johnson.
Amazing Grace fought CDH for 16 months and was given the title of Miracle Kid from Golisano Childrens Hospital, where she received most of the care she needed.
As many as 1,600 infants in the U.S. are affected by CDH every year. The cause of the herniation is still unknown.
