NYS Trooper killed after being hit by car

Chenango Bridge, N.Y. (AP) -- State police say a trooper has died after being hit by a vehicle while he was conducting a traffic stop outside his patrol car on Interstate 81 north of Binghamton.

Police say that Trooper Christopher Skinner of the Sidney barracks in Delaware County was killed instantly around noon Thursday when he was struck by a passing vehicle. The vehicle continued a short distance before the driver stopped and ran into the woods.

The driver was taken into custody after a search.

The incident was on I-81 northbound between exits 6 and 7 in southern New York near the Pennsylvania line.

Police say 42-year-old Skinner was a 13-year veteran from Binghamton. He's survived by his fiance and two children aged 12 and 15.
