Compassionate Care Act passes
Albany, N.Y. (AP) -- New York's Democratic-led Assembly has passed medical marijuana legislation, increasing pressure on the Senate to pass the measure before the session concludes at the end of June.
Dubbed the Compassionate Care Act, the bill passed on Tuesday 91-34. The Assembly had previously passed medical marijuana legislation, and Speaker Sheldon Silver said in April the Assembly would pass the legislation again if the Senate were to take it up.
The Assembly's passage could be a possible indicator that the Republican-led Senate is gearing up to act on medical marijuana.
Medical marijuana cleared its first hurdle and passed the Senate health committee last week, but its prospects remain uncertain. The measure would still have to clear the Republican-led finance committee and be allowed to come to a floor vote by both leaders of the Senate.
