Police: Trooper hit intentionally

Chenango, N.Y. (AP) -- State police say a 60-year-old Florida man intentionally hit a trooper conducting a traffic stop along a southern New York highway, killing him instantly.

Police Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico says Almond Upton intentionally swerved his pickup truck into Trooper Christopher Skinner on Interstate 81 near Binghamton around noon Thursday. Police say the Melrose, Florida man also side-swiped two other vehicles.

Upton was taken into custody an hour later after a police dog tracked him into nearby woods, where he was found naked. Police say he didn't appear drunk or on drugs.

Police say Upton likely will face murder charges. It could not immediately be determined if he has a lawyer.
