Motorized boating ban on Keuka Lake

Penn Yan, N.Y. -- The Yates County Sheriff's Department has issued a motorized boating ban on Keuka Lake.

The state of emergency is still in effect in parts of Yates County as a result of last week's heavy rainfall and flash flooding.

The sheriff's department said the ban is necessary because of floating debris in the lake.  Dock parts, trees and other objects are dangerous to boaters.

In addition, many docks that are still under water could be further damaged by boat wakes.

Public boat launching sites at Penn Yann, State Park and Branchport will be closed to motorized boats.

The ban is in effect until the lakes height recedes.

The sheriff's Marine Patrol will be enforcing the ban and violators will be charged with disorderly conduct.
