U of R set to receive technology grant

Rochester, N.Y. - The University of Rochester is set to receive almost $500,000 grant money for the New York Photonics Manufacturing Initiative, Congresswoman Slaughter and Senators Schumer and Gillibrand announced Thursday.

The grant, funded by the Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology, is meant to strengthen optical, photonic and imagining manufacturers nationwide and make them more globally competitive.

"Research and development is critical to compete in the 21st century global economy," Senator Gillibrand said in a statement. "New York State has long been a national leader in optics, photonics and imaging research and manufacturing, and the University of Rochester is continuing to carry on that legacy in developing a critical roadmap to make the U.S. more competitive in these industries, which will help create new jobs right here at home."

Optics and photonic technology are used across medical, energy, defense and communication fields.

There are 19 universities and non-profit organizations set to receive grant money under the same initiative.

"I've been a steadfast supporter of the optics, photonics imaging and display industries because they built a strong economy here in Rochester, and they will carry our region to economic success in the future," Congresswoman Slaughter said in a statement.
