Frustration for flood victims

Penn Yan, N.Y. -- Frustration is rising for the residents of Penn Yan.

Yates County is moving from emergency response to recovery mode, and people left an informational meeting at Penn Yan Middle School Monday evening without a lot of hope.

13WHAM News spoke with Pam Whitford, a resident in the area. Whitford lost her home in the flood and said, despite reaching out to the Keuka Housing Council, she was still stuck staying with friends.

"They don't have answers," Whitford said. "They just told me Pulteney. Do you know how far Pulteney is? It's like a half-hour, 45-minute drive, and that's where the closest apartment is."

Whitford was not the only one frustrated. Renee Bloom, exective director of the KHC, said calls are beginning to come in from people who need help.

Bloom said the group is still trying to figure out how to deal with all of those in need, especially the people whose home have been condemned.

"Actually, we don't know what we are doing with those people right now," said Bloom. "Whether we can rebuild there, if they are going to be on a flood zone is another question, so right now I don't have an answer for that."

The village collected estimates of the dollar value of damages to determine what options Penn Yan will have to receive aid, but money from the federal level is still a ways away.

So far the village has collected 65 home repair estimates which those totaled $5 million, and that just scratches the surface of damage in Yates County.
