Donation to help K-9 units
Rochester, N.Y. -- We need only to remind you of "Ape" to drive home the idea that K9s are invaluable.
Ape was the K-9 killed in the line of duty in Herkimer last year while helping police take down a shooter.
Thursday, Crimestoppers gave $1,500 to several local law enforcement agencies in an effort to enhance K-9 units.
"Those agencies need to find innovative ways to step up and meet the demands of the environment," says Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks.
"They are worth their weight in gold, always ready to go," added F.J. Bell with the Rochester Police Department.
Crimestoppers Chair, Paul Hawkins, says the money will help but says the gift is largely symbolic.
"We spend a lot of money on the reward fund," says Hawkins. "So every time someone is locked up we give an award."
In the coming days, Crimestoppers will be sending out mailers asking for donations.
